How difficult would it be to travel around some places in the world while using poker as your source of income? Is it easy to find poker venues, legal or illegal? Having a part time job to fund your gambling money and sleeping rough if necessary?

Phil Ivey and Howard Lederer both did it. When he was younger, Lederer admits he was homeless at one point because he could not afford to rent an apartment in NYC and keep a poker bankroll. Ivey sometimes slept on the beach under the Boardwalk after losing his entire stake in poker games in Atlantic City when he was young (he was under 21 and used a fake ID at the time). I wouldn’t recommend sleeping under the Boardwalk! The toughest part of your proposal might be the expense associated with traveling around the world while playing on a limited bankroll.

You can find plenty of legal venues. Pro Player maga ine lists all meaningful cash tournament schedules at virtually every casine poker room. Where there are tournaments there are always good ring games. The trick is to find games that you can beat regularly. You have to have the patience to watch games from the rail at times to si e up the level of competition. As one author put it in his poker book (sorry, I’ve forgotten which one), if you are the eighth best player in the world, and you sit down at a table that has the seven best players in the world at it, you’re in the wrong game. You want to seek out the weakest games you can. That’s where the easiest money is. As you know, if you get all your money in pre-flop and heads up with AA vs JJ (assuming Texas NLHE), you’re going to lose 20% of the time. To offset bad beats and beat the rake, and to maximi e your return on equity, you want to play the weakest players you can at a table with stakes that you can afford.
